I have been having a terrific time at my MAD Open Studios residency so far. I have been there several weeks and the point cloud reconstruction is now ready to be attached to the plastic frame. Here’s how I did it:

- Took the .ply file, picked out a building in it and decimated points to 600 (which I figured was a manageable number of beads to string)

- Worked with my husband, who’s a programmer (I am very lucky to have his help as I can’t code to save my life, alas) to generate printed cross-sections in .svg format

-Taped nylon monofilament at 1cm intervals onto the printed cross-sections and attached black beads and crimps at each point on the line

-Repeated the above many, many times!

Here’s one cross-section ready to go:

And here is the space set up, with a row of cross-sections all beaded:

The next step is to remove the paper guides and hang each ’slice’ up in a frame. I had it made by a plastics fabricator: the top and bottom have 900 laser-cut holes so I can attach the monofilament.

Here’s a cellphone snap of the frame, with the first row already crimped into place:

I’ll post more images of my progress next week!
